Refractive Lens Exchange
Refractive lens exchange, also called lens replacement surgery or clear lens extraction, may be a better option for people with high levels of nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism.
The procedure for refractive lens exchange is virtually identical to cataract surgery. The only difference is that, the lens being replaced is clear, rather than a cloudy lens due to a cataract.
A refractive lens exchange procedure is similar to modern cataract surgery. To begin, Dr. Calotti makes a small incision in either the white area of the eye or on the edge of the cornea. He then inserts a delicate instrument to create a smooth, round opening in the outer capsule of the natural lens. Using an ultrasonic suction probe, he gently breaks up and suctions out the gel from the lens capsule. Then inserts a high quality lens implant, and positions it securely within the natural lens capsule.
Dr. Calotti offers a variety of lens options designed to correct far, intermediate and near distance vision as well as astigmatism. During consultation he will discuss the options that would be most recommended for your most optimum visual outcome.
